Hunan University is located in Changsha, a famous historical and cultural city in China, facing the rippling Xiangjiang River and leaning against the beautiful Yuelu Mountain, which is known as "a thousand-year-old school and a hundred-year-old university".
The school originated from Yuelu Academy founded in 976 A.D., which is the longest higher education institution in China with the same site, and it has always maintained the continuity of culture and education through thousands of years of changes, and it is a vivid epitome of the development of higher education in China and a rare miracle of the world's higher education. 1903 it was reorganized as Hunan Higher Education College, and was formally named Hunan University in 1926, and became one of the 16 national universities in China in 1937. After the founding of New China, Li Da, one of the main founders and early leaders of the Communist Party of China, served as the first president, and Mao Zedong inscribed the name of Hunan University in his own handwriting. 2000, Hunan University merged with Hunan University of Finance and Economics to form the new Hunan University. Since the reform and opening up, the university has entered the ranks of national key universities, "Project 211", "Project 985" and "world-class university" construction of colleges and universities. On September 17, 2020, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to the university for investigation and research, and highly praised the university's talent cultivation and cultural inheritance, suggesting that Yuelu Academy is the origin of the Party's ideological line of seeking truth from facts.

The university was founded in 1955, initially named Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications; in 1960, it was recognized as one of the 64 key colleges and universities in China; in 1993, it was renamed Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications; in 1998, it was selected as one of the first batch of colleges and universities constructed under the 211 Project; in 2011, it was selected as one of the colleges and universities constructed under the 985 Project. In 2011, it was selected as one of the "985 Project" construction universities; in 2017 and 2022, it was selected as one of the "double first-class" construction universities, and the two discipline groups of "information network science and technology" and "computer science and network security" were selected as one of the "double first-class" construction universities. Information Network Science and Technology" and "Computer Science and Network Security" two discipline groups were selected for first-class discipline construction.
